Here's some great free multimedia software you can try next time you need to work with pictures, music, or video.

Irfanview is a great freeware program for viewing and working with image files. It's far superior to the built in Windows Picture Viewer and supports basic image editing features. Irfanview is an essential program we install on almost all our personal computers. We just wish there was a Linux version available.

Google Picasa

Aspiring photo nerds will appreciate how easy it is to edit and print their photos with Google's Picasa photo software. Picasa lets you edit, organize, and print all your pictures, or share them online with Web Albums. If you have hundreds or thousands of photos to organize then Picasa is for you. It's probably just as good as anything you could buy in the store.

ExifToolGUI

Pictures that you take with your digital camera or cell phone contain a surprising amount of hidden information such as camera model, flash, shutter speed, and maybe even the GPS coordinates of where the picture was taken! You can easily view this information using the ExifTool GUI front end for the excellent ExifTool program. Installation is done manually but is well worth it for anyone interested in photo file metadata.

Exact Audio Copy

Exact Audio Copy Homepage

We prefer to buy our music on CDs or DVDs but occasionally need a digital copy for our portable MP3 players. Exact Audio Copy (EAC) allows you to copy your original discs to a variety of digital audio files such as WMV, FLAC, Ogg Vorbis, or MP3. MP3 encoding requires manual installation of LAME or another external MP3 encoder. We've had excellent results using EAC and LAME to produce high quality encodings of our music CDs. No more static, pops, gaps, or missing beginning or endings of songs. Use of LAME may be illegal in some countries, so be sure to check your local regulations.
